Empowering Black Women in Tech with curated resources for growth and success

Be bold in your vision

Google is your friend here, and go outside your domain – like the Alzheimer’s associations vision is to “eliminate Alzheimer's Disease”! The vision statement for Tesla includes “…driving the worlds transition to electric vehicles.” Those are big!

Be clear in your mission.

Your mission if the thing that should compel people to come to work every day and sweat the details.

Set clear and realistic goals.

Make sure that your goals are clear and achievable.

Get metrics defined.

Make sure that people know exactly what success looks like

BWBN seeks to address the factors that will contribute to black women in Canada having opportunities for economic security and prosperity, professional growth and diversity and a high quality of life in their communities. These factors fuel the vision of The BLACK WOMEN BUSINESS NETWORK (BWBN) and resides at the heart of our strategic plan and operations. Our aim is to implement programs and services that will have economic and generational impact in the lives of black women in Canada.

If you have all these, just get them on paper and make sure that you have people include this slide as part of presentations. Align people on all these things. If you don’t have the content yet, start with the vision and work your way through it, completing each section.

We believe that black women’s participation in entrepreneurial activities and promotion of their professional advancement enables them to support their families with additional income and thus play a significant role in Canada’s socio-economic development.

Driving alignment

There was a project we consulted on a few years ago where there was a misunderstanding between the team and a stakeholder regarding expectations. The confusion stemmed from something as simple as the definition of the word Beta.

The stakeholder was saying Beta release of the product by a certain date, and then the team started talking about it as a Pilot release, and then people started talking about an MVP (minimum viable product) and finally, we just simply put a slide together that listed all those different things and took it to the stakeholder and said, “tell us what you expect”.

Sometimes the simple act of writing things down and driving that clarity is all that’s needed. Such is the case this template, it can be used to drive alignment with others.
